MPCB says 75 percent of industrial waste can be recycled

H. D. Gandhe, Sub-Regional Officer, Maharashtra Pollution Control Board - in a workshop organised by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) in Pune - stated that almost 75 percent of waste generated by industries can be recycled. He also mentioned that adopting best practices can result in reducing cost and increasing efficiency besides giving companies other intangible benefits.

The speakers at the workshop, 'Reduce, Reuse, Recycle,' came from the industry as well as government bodies and companies involved in waste management business. Also, the participants at the workshop stressed on the importance of efficient disposal of industrial waste. Gandhe pointed out that industries are slowly realising these benefits and are gradually integrating waste management in their overall business strategy. Besides, a number of new companies are expected to capture the growing business opportunities in the waste management sector.

According to CII, India currently produces more than 65 million tonnes of waste annually, of which more than 90 percent requires proper treatment. If the plethora of regulations concerning waste disposal are not effectively implemented, the quality of life in the country will be gravely affected in future.
