Mumbai gets a first-of-its-kind luxurious public washroom
In a bid to provide the best of public toilet facilities in Mumbai, a swanky public toilet was inaugurated in Kandivali in the western region of Mumbai. Interestingly, the public toilet has air conditioners, a 42-inch LCD television along with a sofa set, making it the most luxurious in the city. Besides, on the offing are provisions for bathing and a changing room. With two cleaners to ensure cleanliness and maintenance of the facility, there are two security guards keeping a vigil on the facility round the clock. Apart from all these luxuries, the urinals can be used for free whereas the toilets and bathing cubicles will be charged at Rs. 5 per visit.

However, this lavish expenditure on the public toilet, has, earned the criticism of social activists who termed it as 'wasteful'. As reported in a local daily, Nitai Mehta, Founder, Praja Foundation, said, "The city needs more toilets. This is a good initiative, but instead of one toilet, they should have initiated and made more toilets without facilities like television sets and sofas." On the other hand, MNS MLA Pravin Darekar, who commissioned the swanky toilet, mentioned that he wanted the facility to be more than just a public toilet. He even added that there are times when women want to use the toilet but are afraid to do so because there is no security.

Prakash Darekar, a corporator from Dahisar, further added that students or others who come to the city for a day and can't afford a hotel room, can freshen up at these premises. Such facilities will help them directly as they can come here, get ready, and leave for their interviews or exams.
