Segregate waste or end up in jail
The state government of Karnataka has introduced the Karnataka Municipal Corporations (Amendment) Bill, 2013. According to this, citizens who fail to segregate waste and those who litter, spit, urinate or defecate in the open will be penalised. Persons caught five times for failing to segregate dry and wet waste at home will be punished with a jail term up to three months or a fine of Rs. 1,000 or both.

Moreover, individuals who don't segregate waste will be punished with a Rs. 100 fine for the first offence and a Rs. 500 penalty for repeating it. Dumping building waste will invite a penalty of Rs. 1,000 for the first offence and Rs. 5,000 for subsequent instances. The bill says solid waste generated in all city corporation areas is very high. This solid waste has to be disposed off in a scientific manner, and as per the guidelines prescribed in Solid Waste (Handling and Management) Rules, 2000.
