British waste warrior fights the Uttarakhand battle
The Himayalan tsunami at Uttarakhand has shaken the conscious of the nation. However, there is another tsunami that has been raging in the mountains unnoticed for a long time. In the aftermath of the Uttrakahand, a British national, Jodie Underhill, has taken it upon herself to battle this unnoticed calamity and clean up the mess being left behind by relief operations in the disaster-struck area. The Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Waste Warriors - a local NGO – aims to make India litter-free. Underhill has been collecting garbage at food stalls at Doon Helidrome in Dehradun that provide food for rescued pilgrims and their kin who often converge at the helipad. Her companion, a garbage bag, has earned her the ‘garbage girl’ moniker. Upset with the sorry state of the garbage-strewn helidrome, she, along with her staff, started collecting the waste while urging food stalls to use reusable crockery instead of non-biodegradable plates and cups. She also stressed on the immediate requirement of a huge clean-up operation in the affected areas after the rescue operations. Underhill feels that the flash floods were nature’s way of “telling us that enough is enough.” She believes that we must take care of our immediate environment in order to prevent future disasters. Underhill also expressed her interest in helping co-ordinate a cleanliness mission in the region and advising on how to collect, dispose of and recycle as much waste as possible.
