Benches made from plastic waste
The Forest Department officials of the Sanjay Gandhi National Park (SGNP) in Mumbai have decided to recycle and turn the garbage thrown inside the park by callous visitors into articles of civic amenities. According to the officials around 600 kg plastic of waste is collected from the park every month. The plastic waste collected by NGO and the staff members during clean-up drives mainly consists of packaged drinking water bottles which require a huge storage space. Hence, on the occasion of World Forestry Day on March 21, 2013, with the help of Indian Centre for Plastics in the Environment (ICPE), a shredding machine was set up. The waste after being treated in the shredding machine will be sent to a set-up in Gujarat where it will be converted into planks to make benches and other furniture items. Also the forest officials are trying to spread awareness by educating tourists against littering the park and have started collecting deposit of Rs 50-100 from visitors carrying plastic bottles and bags to dissuade them from littering. Later on the deposit is refunded only if the visitors show the exact number if bags and bottles they were carrying while on their way out.
