To curb the practice of commuters using toilets of stationary trains, the department of railways is planning to set up toilets at all platforms of New Delhi railway station. This move comes with an intention for the convenience of passengers. Currently, only platform number one and 16 have deluxe toilet facility for both men and women. Besides, three more platforms have urinals for men. According to a senior official they are also planning to set up stainless steel toilets at a few platforms. These are expected to be durable and easy to clean. If successful, similar structures will be erected at the other platforms.
In a similar initiative, 367km of tracks have been marked all over the country to be made free from discharge of human waste. Bio-toilets will be installed on trains run on this stretch. Out of this marked stretch, 175 km will become discharge-free from October 2. A senior Northern Railway official said the 141km Kanalus-Dwarka-Okha and the 34km Porbunder-Wansjalya sections will become 'zero toilet discharge' routes, October 2 onwards,. Trains on the Jammu-Katra section, covering 78km, and the 114km track between Rameshwaram and Manamadurai stations will be equipped with bio-toilets by March next year. Bio-toilets will be installed on each of the 40 trains run on the 367km stretch by the end of this fiscal.
