Civic body urges citizens, NGOs to help keeping Mumbai clean

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) under the vision of ‘Swachh Bharat Abhiyan’ has initiated a plan wherein citizens can get in touch with the local ward offices to get areas in their vicinity cleaned every Saturday, between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. The BMC has also sought the help of local NGOs and Advanced Locality Managements (ALMs) of the areas to aid the civic body in implementing the plan.

Seema Redkar, BMC’s officer on special duty (solid waste management) said that cleanliness cannot be only the government’s or the corporation’s prerogative and citizens and NGOs should look at the exercise of waste management as a continuous process. Under the plan, citizens can get in touch with the local ward officers by either meeting the officials or calling them for informing about the areas in their ward that need to be cleaned. The officer also mentioned that besides manpower, BMC will also aid citizens and ALMs with the necessary equipment.
