Upholding the initiative of the Nadia district administration, of involving schoolchildren in propagating healthy practices for sanitation and getting rid of open defecation, the West Bengal Commission for Protection of Child Rights has communicated to all district magistrates to advocate and emulate the move. The Chairperson of State Commission of Protection of Child Rights (SCPCR) believes that the involvement of children in propagating safe sanitation could go a long way in all other districts of West Bengal as in Nadia. He is of the view that children and some teachers could advocate the cause of improving sanitation facilities in both urban and rural areas. No additional fund investment is required for the initiative presently. With the help of some dedicated teachers, the idea could be inculcated in children.
Shaubar Shauchagaar or Toilet for All, the initiative launched by the Nadia district, has accomplished the task of making 95 per cent of the population use toilets, as claimed by the district administration. Every Monday in some 4,000 schools of the district, students are administered an oath to use toilets. Under this scheme, toilets are constructed by tapping the funds of the Nirmal Bharat Abhiyaan, the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme and the NRLM.
Also, the Nadia district administration organised a mega human chain, stretching from the southern end to the northern end of the district along NH 34- about 122 km, on February 21, where people took a pledge to make Nadia an open defecation free district.
