Hotels should have organic waste plants, says Venkaiah Naidu

Union urban development minister M. Venkaiah Naidu has proposed to make it mandatory for all restaurants and hotels to have an organic waste plant – in view of its importance to be managed at source. While inaugurating an organic waste management plant on Malcha Marg in New Delhi, he added that he intends to write to the Ministry of Tourism to make it mandatory in all five- and four-star hotels and eatery establishments. The plant, installed by the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC), which can process one tonne waste in 24 hours, will convert the organic waste of hotels and eateries in this area into compost for horticulture and agriculture use. This is part of NDMC's pilot project to manage organic waste at source.

A similar machine was installed at Palika Services Officers Institute (PSOI). But, this the first time that a plant has been installed in a market. It will not only bring down the cost collection, transportation and disposal of waste. It will also reduce the landfill space and water, noise and air pollution. As part of the smart city project, the NDMC plans to become energy neutral by March 2016. It is setting up waste-to-energy plants and composting plants in its jurisdiction to effectively manage the waste. It has already installed waste-to-energy plants in four parks. It also plans to set up more composting plants in all major markets. Source: PTI
